CHMTA‚Äôs Masterclass Competition is an opportunity for advanced piano students to play for a master teacher. This year we are proud to announce that the 2018 Masterclass Competition judge and presenter will be pianist Kwan Yi from East Carolina University.

Beginning at 9am, Dr. Yi will listen to 20 student auditions and provide every student with written comments.  Each audition is 10 minutes maximum in length. If an audition goes beyond 10 minutes the performer will be stopped without penalty. After auditions, a few students will be chosen to perform in a Masterclass presented by Dr. Yi from 3-5pm in Person Hall.

Auditions: Beginning at 9am in Room 2011 of the Kenan Music Building

There are no repertoire requirements, though repertoire is to be memorized. Students 12 and under should be prepared to present late intermediate to advanced solo literature, while students 13 and older should prepare advanced solo repertoire.

At the conclusion of the auditions, winners will have the opportunity to participate in a Masterclass with Dr. Yi in Person Hall.

Masterclass: Begins at 3pm in Person Recital Hall

Students who wish to participate in the Masterclass Competition must submit a registration form below.

Registration is limited to 20 students and will close when filled. Times for auditions are on a first-come-first-served basis.

Payment for participation is $30 and will be requested upon registration. Consult your teacher if you have any questions!

The Department of Music occupies three principal buildings: Kenan Music Building (125 S. Columbia Street), Hill Hall (145 E. Cameron Avenue), and Person Hall (181 East Cameron Avenue). Concerts and other departmental events are typically held in these buildings or at Memorial Hall (140 E. Cameron Avenue), as indicated on the map below. The red arrows illustrate the location of music department buildings, the orange arrow displays the location of Memorial Hall, and the yellow arrow indicates the location of the Swain Parking Lot.

Please note that parking is limited in the Swain Lot, being available only after 5 p.m. on weekdays and throughout the weekend, though the lot is sometimes reserved for sporting events or Memorial Hall evening events. Additional visitor parking at hourly rates is located in the parking garage between Rosemary Street and Columbia Street.

Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time.
